Sustainable use of natural resources

The vegetable and fruit sectors are working hard to achieve maximum sustainability. This is also the case in terms of energy and limiting greenhouse gas emissions.

Renewable energy

Most growers are already taking steps to save energy. In particular, they are investing in renewable energy by installing solar panels or combined heat and power (CHP) systems.  CHPs convert fuel into heat for the greenhouse and electricity. This electricity is used on the farm and/or fed into the public grid.

Greenhouse growers also frequently use LED lighting, which ensures more efficient use of energy.  Screens on the sides and on the top of the greenhouse also help to save energy: they keep light and heat inside the greenhouse.

Intelligent storage

Apples and pears are only harvested in one season. They are then stored in refrigerators to guarantee their quality for longer. The sector uses environmentally-friendly refrigerants and optimises insulation and storage space.

Sustainable transport

The impact of transporting fruit and vegetables is minimised.
Foldable crates make it possible to transport more crates per pallet. Transport is also efficient.

Did you know that...

  • ... 61% of the growers already use electric tools or means of transport?
  • some 65% of horticultural businesses are taking steps to promote more sustainable transport? This can range from optimising journeys and return loads to setting up public transport and using less polluting means of transport.
  • means of transport must comply with the European EURO VI standard? Among producers, 44% already use vehicles - tractors, vans, lorries - that meet the EURO VI standard.
